Problem:
Single-use plastic has become commonplace in American society, especially on college campuses. Plastic products are often made of toxic chemicals which harm humans, animals and the environment. Most plastic is designed for short-term use as packaging but is destined for a landfill or litter where it remains for decades. The challenge is reaching busy students who are disconnected from their habitual plastic consumption and convincing them that taking small steps can make an impact.
Solution:
My objective is to reduce plastic waste by providing practical alternatives to BSU Students. I did so by placing a sculpture in the dining hall where students are offered single-use plastics. This sparks a connection between their dining experience and how repetitive behaviors add up. The sculpture illustrates an attainable substitute with more value than multiple plastic items used once. Additionally, I created support material to provide more information and extend further interest.
Data Sculpture
I created a series of data sculptureĀ featuringĀ the three most commonly littered plastics. I formed the material into the number correlating with a single person's average use throughout one year. I posed the numbers next to reusable items and indicated they have greater value by incorporating the logomark.

durable table service > 552 eating utensils
a canvas tote bag > 365 plastic bags
